Rodgers plots to strengthen Liverpool's defence with move for Benfica's Melgarejo

Liverpool have targeted Benfica's Lorenzo Melgarejo in a bid to provide the cover at left-back they require.
Manager Brendan Rodgers said last week while Liverpool were in Australia that he wanted to bring in another option at left-back, as he only has Jose Enrique and England Under 21 international Jack Robinson for that position.
A deal for Valencia's Aly Cissokho had been discussed but Rodgers has now turned to Melgarejo, a Paraguay international, and would be prepared to give him first team opportunities if an agreement could be reached. Liverpool want to do a loan with a view to a permanent transfer.


elgarejo, who played for Benfica in their Europa League final defeat against Chelsea, would require a work permit in order to play in the Barclays Premier League and that process would not be cut and dried, as he only has one full international cap.
The 22-year-old has been linked with Arsenal and Fenerbahce this summer. Strengthening at left-back is one of Liverpool's main priorities, as is bringing an attacking midfielder, having missed out on Henrikh Mykhitaran.

Luis Suárez has not requested Premier League intervention in his contract dispute with Liverpool, one week on from Arsenal's club record bid of £40,000,001 for the Uruguay international.

Arsenal had hoped the 26-year-old would agitate for a move from Anfield once they triggered what Suárez and his representatives believed to be a release clause in his contract. But, aside from telling Liverpool that he wants Champions League football next season, the striker has not sought outside assistance from the Premier League over the transfer.

Liverpool maintain the clause entitles Suárez to be informed only of any offer over £40m and for the club to enter discussions with the bidding party should it wish to do so. Suárez could refer the matter to a Premier League regulatory commission, or his lawyers, but the organisation has not been approached by the striker or his representatives.

A Liverpool source said: "We've all examined the clause in detail. All it obliges is good faith negotiations about Luis's future. There is absolutely no obligation to sell and that is very clear."

Schalkes Manager Horst Heldt hat die Gerüchte um einen Wechsel von Kyriakos Papadopoulos klar zurückgewiesen. Zuvor hatte bereits ein griechischer Radiosender die Einigung über einen Wechsel zum FC Liverpool gemeldet, außerdem berichtete die "Sport Bild" von einem offiziellen Angebot der Reds.

Luis Suarez vom FC Liverpool möchte Medienberichten zufolge unbedingt zum FC Arsenal wechseln und könnte nun juristische Schritte einleiten um den Wechsel zu erzwingen. Mit den Reds würde er in der kommenden Saison nicht Champions League spielen können.

Der Tabellensiebte der vergangenen Saison hatte ein Angebot der Londoner über 40.000.001 britische Pfund - umgerechnet über 46 Millionen Euro - abgelehnt. Arsenal und Suarez glaubten, dass damit eine Klausel im Vertrag des Stürmers gültig werde, die ihm bei einer Ablösesumme von über 40 Millionen Pfund einen Wechsel ermöglicht. Liverpool behauptet, die Summe zwinge den Verein lediglich, den Spieler über das Angebot zu informieren.
Erfahrung mit Transferschwierigkeiten
Suarez hat bereits Erfahrung mit rechtlichen Vorgehensweisen bei Transferschwierigkeiten gesammelt. 2007 wollte ihn der FC Groningen nicht zu Ajax Amsterdam ziehen lassen. Suarez brachte die Angelegenheit damals vor das Schiedsgericht und verlor. Dennoch ließ in Groningen schließlich gehen.
